Majority party members seek to pass $3.5 trillion spending bill.
Senators returned to Washington, D.C., on Monday, marking the end of its month-long summer recess and the restart of major negotiations over the country’s annual budget. Congress has a deadline of September 30 to pass a spending bill, or face a government shutdown. This week it is important to pass the first draft of the reconciliation package to move through the various committees.
Majority party members of Congress have a goal of passing the major spending bill designed to assist Americans in recovering from the impacts of the pandemic. The $3.5 trillion package would need to be approved by all 50 senators of the president’s party to pass. However, Senator Joe Manchin has stated he will not support the large price tag.
“There’s no way we can get this done by the 27th if we do our job,” the West Virginia senator said. ”We should be looking at everything, and we’re not. We don’t have the need to rush into this and get it done within one week because there’s some deadline we’re meeting, or someone’s going to fall through the cracks.”
